You know if Kang had just left things alone, he wouldn’t have had a problem with his younger self. Introduced in Young Avengers #5 (2005) by Allan Heinberg and Jim Cheung, Nathaniel Richard was bullied as a child. During one of these bullying session, he was visited by Kang, his future self. Kang showed the young lad his future and gave him a powered suit but Nathaniel was horrified at what he would become. He fled into the past hoping to get the aid of the people who had defeated Kang on a number of occasions, the Avengers. However at the time he arrived, the Avengers had broken up following the events of Disassembled. Trying to contact Stark, he snuck into a Stark Industries warehouse and stumbled upon a deactivated Vision. The Vision would give him a program that located possible people who could become Avengers in the future. He would downloaded the program and located 3 people, Asgardian, Hulkling and Patriot. 

Together, they became a team that the media dubbed the Young Avengers, because the team patterned themselves after the Avengers, with Nathaniel becoming Iron Lad. They would begin saving people and doing heroic as a way of training. One night at the Avengers mansion, Iron Lad was found by Cap, Iron Man and Jessica Jones. They were later approached by Kang who explained that because the child was in this time period he was destabilizing the timestream. After a battle with the Young Avengers, Iron Lad agreed to return to his time. His suit would remain and became the Young Vision.

However, Iron Lad would instead travel through that to find a way to prevent and undo his future self. He would aided the Young Avengers in preventing the X-men from killing the Scarlet Witch by bring the team back in time. The sight of seeing the reanimated Jack O’Hearts cause Scarlet Witch to bring them back to the present alongside Scott Lang, who had died at the time. A battle between the X-men, Avengers and Dr. Doom led Stature to lose her life. This cause Iron Lad to become angry and lead to him destroying Young Vision. He travelled through the timeline. It is believed he started to become Kid Kang.

Out of the original four Young Avengers, Iron Lad had the least exposer. (The one in the Exiles is an alternate universe). That’s why it was so surprising that he got a figure in the Toybiz Box set.

  • Background:
    • Before Kang showed his young self, he gave the young lad a super powered suit. When Nathaniel went back in time and set about setting up the Young Avengers, he pattern his suit, which morph it’s design, after Iron man. 
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This is a figure you will need for your Avengers, Young Avengers and Kang  collections. However, even when it was released, this set was extremely hard to find and now goes for a minimum of 150. Out of the four figures in this set, this is the one I think will have the least chance of getting made. 
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes, but it seem unlikely.
