He may have started out as a villain but he really is just a big teddy bear. Introduced in Amazing Spider-Man #139 (1974) by Gerry Conway and Ross Andru, Max Markham was a professional wrestler who lost his license when J. Jonah Jameson published a scathing editorial on his brutal method of wrestling. A decade later he would team up with the Jackal, who gave him an exoskeleton, which he used to attack the Daily Bugle and was defeated by Spider-man. He would later attack Spider-man alongside Jackal but was defeated by the web head and sent to prison. After his release, he had the Tinkerer update his suit and challenge Spider-man to a match, which Spider-man pretended to lose to allow Max to save face.

Still wanting revenge, he would team up with Gibbon, Spot and Kangaroo as the Spider-man Revenge Squad but when Spot and Kangaroo wanted to kill Spider-man instead humiliating him, Grizzly and Gibbon teamed up with Spider-man to defeat the other two. Inspired by this, Grizzly and Gibbon teamed up to try and be a new superhero duo. However, after several attempts at being a hero, he returned to petty crimes and would later return as an enforcer for Hammerhead before joining the Hood’s Gang. He was later captured and displayed in a Zoo as part of Alyosha Kravenoff attempt to hunt Animal themed villains and heroes. He was freed by the Punisher.

He was later recruited and augmented by Norman Osborn to join the Thunderbolts before Osborn fell from grace, where he was sent to the Raft. After a run in with Deadpool, he would join Supervillains Anonymous, a help group for villains to talk about problems they encountered. He would later move to Miami to get revenge against Ant-man but later realized that it was Eric O’Grady he wanted revenge against not Scott Lang. Taking pity on Grizzly, Lang hired him as part of Lang’s security firm. After a while, he, along with fellow employee Machinesmith, would leave the firm and would later join the Army of Evil when Hydra took over the US. He was last seen in Ravencroft, hoping to reform.

Classic

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends The Amazing Spider-man Deluxe – Marvel’s Grizzly

  • Background:
    • This is Grizzly as he usually appears, as a big man in a bear costume. Like all classic versions, it has been drawn differently by different artists.
  • Why do you need it for your collection?
    • A more obscure character, this can be got mainly for your Spider-man’s rogue gallery. It can also be gotten for an Ant-man allies/rogue collection. He was also a member of the Thunderbolts so you may want to get him for that.
  • Does it need a remake?
    • No.
