His romance with Rogue took a heartbreaking turn in this universe. Introduced in X-Men: Alpha #1 (1994) by Scott LobdellMark WaidRoger Cruz and Steve Epting, this version of Remy origins started off the same as the Prime version, being adopted and raised by the Thieves Guild. However in this universe, Candra, the leader of the guild, sided with Apocalypse and became one of his horsemen. She was eventually killed by Holocaust, causing Gambit to flee the guild. He would later come across the X-men when they were fighting some Infinite soldier. Gambit saved Magneto’s life from an attack from Havok and the two became close friends, with Gambit joining the team. He began a romance with Rogue and was even going to propose but before he could, she choose to be with Magneto instead. When they were attacked by Weapon X, Rogue choose to save Magneto first before Gambit. This caused him to make the decision to leave the X-men.

He would later form a new team called the X-Ternals and gained a new lover in Lila Cheney. When the X-men learned of the true universe following Bishop revealing it, Magneto tasked Gambit and his team with the task of stealing the M’Kraann Crystal. They arrive in the Shi’ar Empire and skipping a bit, manage to obtain the crystal. They returned to Earth but Strong Guy turned out to be a double agent and stole the Crystal from them for Apocalypse and well as kidnapping Charles, Rogue and Magneto’s infant son. To make up for this, Gambit joined the X-men on their raid on Apocalypse’s Citadel. When Colossus went mad with rage upon believing his sister was killed and after he had killed Kitty, Gambit was forced to kill his friend. After the X-men succeed in defeating Apocalypse and Phoenix stopped the nuclear missiles from destroying the US, Gambit officially rejoined the X-men.

Gambit would remain with the X-men as they tried to rebuild the US. This included a fight with the dimension hopping Exiles. When it was revealed that Magneto was being blackmailed by Sinister, they fought the Sinister Six with Gambit, along with Nightcrawler and Dazzler, were swallowed up by Cloak. Storm tried to save them but only Nightcrawler and Dazzler emerged and it was believed he was killed…… Until he somehow appeared alive and well when the Prime Universe Uncanny X-force arrive in the AOA universe looking for a Celestial Life Seed. During this time, Weapon X had become the new host for Apocalypse as Weapon Omega. Gambit would sacrifice his life in order for both teams to leave with the seed into the prime universe.

Following Hasbro’s 2 waves of AOA figures, and a few other deluxe sets, There has been a few fans wishes for much more from that universe. Gambit would receive a figure as part of the Nemesis/Genocide wave.

X-ternals

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Nemesis (Genocide) wave – Gambit

  • Background:
    • This is Gambit as he appeared leading the X-Ternals, a team of freedom fighter that were also thieves (Think Robin Hood and his Merry men.) He would were this up to the end of the original AOA saga.
  • Why do you need it for your collection?
    • If you have been building the Age Of Apocalypse universe since the TB days or when Hasbro released the 2 wave of figure, you may want to get this to add to that universe, mostly for the X-men team as we may never get the X-ternal members.
  • Does it need a remake?
    • No.
