Introduced in New Mutants #99 by Rob Liefeld and Fabian Nicieza, Maria grew up in an abusive family, which saw her father leaving, her younger siblings dying, her mother becoming a drug addict and her sister, Lucia, nearly being rape by her mother’s boyfriend. Maria mutantation activated and she killed the boyfriend. Lucia and Maria buried the body but her mother hate Maria’s pet pigeons in revenge causing Maria to kill her mother. Lucia and Maria fled into the sewer, joining the Morlocks and taking the names Thornn and Feral respectively.

After a while, Feral joined the New Mutants as they were being transformed into the X-force team, as one of it’s founding members. She served the X-force well, until they tried to rescue Henry Gyrich from the MLF and Reignfire. Reignfire convinced her to attack Gyrich but Cable shot her with a non-lethal round. Reignfire aducted her as he fled. She would emerge again when she confronted Thornn and Cannonball. During the confrontation, Thornn force Feral to admit that she had killed her mother and her mother’s boyfriend. Cannonball convinced her to admit to her crimes and she was arrested. However in prison, she contracted the Legacy Virus and escaped with other sufferers to find a cure.

She would join King Bedlam’s Hellions team which saw her attack Siryn and slashing her throat. She was eventually cured of the virus and had tried to be better by joining the Mumbai department of X-Corps. She would lose her powers after M-Day but maintained her appearance. After being summoned by Black Panther to Wakanda, she was somehow given back her powers by Romolus. Helping Wolverine, Feral went with him and other feral mutants to search the Weapon X facility where she was killed by Sabretooth.

She would be brought back during Necrosha and later was forced to hunt down Wolfsbane’s child as a ghost. She would be resurrected by the Five during the Krakoa and was forced to be the roommate to Marrow. They didn’t get along at first resulting in a fight but when they found out they were both Morlocks, they began to find common grounds. She was captured by Orchis and tranformed into one of their hounds. She was sent to attack Nightcrawler, then the Uncanny Spider-man, but was rescued by Legion. Following the devolution, she joined the X-factor team but was killed in a nuclear explosion.
