Rhodey wasn’t the first African American to become Iron Man. Introduced in Iron Man #21 (1970) by Archie Goodwin and George Tuska, Eddie March was a former professional boxer and sparring partner to Happy Hogan, who had to retire due to a blood clod in his brain. With the money he gained through his career running out due to medical expenses, he was offered a job by Happy to work for Stark Industries. He earned Tony’s trust, who would reveal that he was Iron man to Eddie. Due to the stress being Iron man was causing to his heart, Tony was thinking of retiring and looking for a replace. Eddie volunteered and, even though he was trained by Tony, he was severely injured by the Crimson Dynamo.
Tony paid for his medical expenses and as a reward gave him a spare Iron man suit, which he used to help Tony against Doctor Spectrum. However, he was taken over by Dr. Spectrum and attacked Thor. Thor defended himself but, not knowing the situation, injured Eddie. Tony arrived to prevent Thor from killing him and would work to save Eddie’s life. However, the procedure caused him to transform into the Freak. He got better and Tony helped him find his brother. He was last seen when Rhodey gathered former Iron Men to help defeat Ultimo as part of the Iron Legion. He got injured again.
This is a lesser-known character that many would not be familiar with. However, since has worn two of the Iron Man armors, you can use them as this character, especially if you want to build the Iron Legion.
