Introduced in Defenders #13 (1974) by Len Wein and Sal Buscema, William “Billy” Roberts was an evangelist who elicited unwavering devotion from his religious flock. One of his followers found the Power Prism which he gave to Roberts. As the new Dr. Spectrum, he used the Prism to gain more powers and began gathering the rest of the Squadron Sinister. This team was recruited by Nebulon who sent them to battle the Defenders. Nighthawk would switch side but the other three would continue their criminal activities. He would lose and regain the Prism a few times and would lose his life in this effort.

This version of Spectrum is a little-known version, with many people thinking he was the original Spectrum. He would receive a figure as part of a Squadron Supreme 2-pack.

    • Like many of the weilders of the Power Prism, Roberts would wear a similar costume to the Kinji version. This has been designed differently by different artists.
