Some people will do anything to stay in power. Introduced in Avengers #13 (1964) by Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and Don Heck, Count Luchino Nefaria was an Italian nobleman and a major figure in the Maggia. His wife died at childbirth, and he sent his daughter, Giulietta, to be adopted by the Frost family in the US. (She would grow to become the Iron Man villain Madame Masque. When the Avengers began working to try and take down the Magia, Nefaria went to the US and battled the Avengers. However, he was defeated but not before hurting Wasp, causing her and Giant-man to leave the Avengers for the first time. He would later fight the X-men, which saw the death of the first Thunderbird and presumably his own death.

He would later hire Living Lazer, Power Man (later Atlas) and Whirlwind as his Lethal Legion and boosted their powers. He sent them to battle the Avengers as his minion analyzed their powers and gave them to himself, increasing them hundredfold. He attacked New York but was defeated by the Avengers. He would later die when his powers aged him rapid and during a fight with Iron Man and his daughter. After being part of the Legion of the Unliving, he would return to life as an Ionic being. After a brief fight with Ka-Zar and Captain America, he kidnapped and controlled Wonder man and Atlas and went to battle his daughter. It took the combined might of Madame Masque’s force, the Avengers, and the Thunderbolts to stop him.

He was later seen at the Raft during the Electro breakout and escape. He later tried to help the Hood gain powers but was defeated by the New Avengers. He later reformed the Lethal Legion and sent them to the Project P.E.G.A.S.U.S. Facility to find the Catalyst. They were stopped by Spider-man and were attacked by the Sin Eater. They lost their powers and were sent to Ravencroft. Once the Sin-eater was defeated, he regained his powers, and it is presumed he returned to crime.

Nefaria is a character a lot of Avengers fans have been asking for a while. He would receive his first figure in the Iron man Retro wave.

  • Background:
    • Nefaria formed the Lethal Legion with Living Laser, Whirlwind and Atlas and sent them to battle the Avengers. While they battled the Avengers, Nefaria got one of his scientists to analysis their powers and give them to Nefaria, increasing their powers hundred-fold. Because he admired super-villains, he designed a new costume for himself. This would become his signature look.
  • Why do you need it for your collection?
    • You may want to get him to for primarily your Avengers villains’ shelf, particularly if you want to form his version of the Lethal Legion, which we have a good number of members for. X-men fans may want him as well as he was responsible for the death of the original Thunderbird.
