Introduced in Marvel Two-In-One Annual #7 (1982) by Tom DeFalco and Ron Wilson, Tryco Slatterus is a being that has exist practically since the start of the known universe. The last surviving member of his race, he would meet up with other immortal being forming a group that would become known as the Elders of the Universe. To overcome their boredom, each Elder dedicated themselves to one thing, like games or collecting. For Tryco, he wanted to be the champion of competitive combat. He would travel from planet, challenging their champions to a fighting contest and beating them.
He would eventually make his way to Earth, taking on the world powerhouse heroes, like Sasquatch, Thor, Wonder man, Hulk and more. Each were either beaten or disqualified from the fight. It wasn’t until Thing that he had a fair fight that made the Champion leave. Later, Thanos stole the Power Gem from him and Champion attempt to get his revenge but was teleported away. He would later join his brethren in trying to kill Galactus and collapsing the universe in order for one of them to take his place in the new universe. They failed. Later he was given the Power Gem again by the Grandmaster before Thanos came to bargain with him. Later he was believed killed along with the other cosmic being when Thanos used the Cosmic Cube on them. Instead they were sent to the Cancerverse, only to be free with the aid of the Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy.
Later, he went to the planet Skardon, where he began taking on cosmic heroes in a weaponless boxing match. He defeated the likes of Gladiator, Silver Surfer and Beta Ray Bill, with the Power Gem attached to his forehead. Adam Warlock continued to search for someone to beat him, summoning She-Hulk. After Champion defeated her, She-Hulk demanded a rematch in three much. After training with Gamora, She-Hulk declared that the Power Gem was considered a weapon and had Champion remove it. She-hulk would defeat her, which cause Champion to swear revenge by giving the Power Gem to Titania. He would later try and fight the Deadpool Corps when they were choosen to beat the Awareness, only to later join them as Championpool.
