His lineage gets confusing as hell. Introduced in Uncanny X-Men #428 (2003) by Chuck Austen and Sean Phillips, Azazel is said to be one of the oldest mutants in the world, leader of the Neyaphem, a race of demon like mutants. It was said he fought Mephisto under the name Satan. He and his kind were later trapped in the Brimstone Dimension by an angelic race Cheyarafim. As the only member of the race that could travel freely to the real world, Azazel would work behind the scenes and made deals with humans, like the deal he made with the St. Croix family. At some point, he appeared in Germany, where he met Mystique. She was married to a German Baron, Christian Wagner, but Azazel believed he has successfully seduced and impregnated Mystique. However, this turned out to be a ruse. Destiny, who was pretending to be Mystique’s maid, warned her lover that Azazel would destroy the mutantkind. So Mystique used her powers to change into Azazel down to the genetic level. She impregnated Destiny with a baby that would grow up to become Kurt Wagner, Nightcrawler, in hopes he would defeat his “father”. After Mystique killed Christian, Azazel believed she was dead and left and began siring dozens of children, most with demonic and/or teleporting powers.
Decades later, these children, including Kurt, were drawn to the La Isla des Demonas. In a zombie like state, they opened a portal to the Brimstone Dimension. Having followed Kurt, the X-men entered the portal to save him. After Azazel tormented the team making them believe he was the real Satan, the X-men defeated Azazel. After Kurt’s death, Azazel would try to take over heaven but was defeated by the X-men, with Kurt returning to Earth. He would later be asked for help by the Weapon X-Force by Mystique. He was later seen in Krakoa with the rest of mutantkind. He would begin working with the Goblin Queen as a liaison to the Limbo dimension, where he would join her X-men team to rescue mutants after Orchis’ attack on the island. He would later kill his own child, Abyss, who was being used by Orchis before he was ripped in half by Bamf Dragon (Kurt Wagner from another universe).
Possible Figures
- Which has the best chance of being made? – Out of the costume, I think the suit or plain clothes like the one in the profile area has the best chance of made into a Marvel Legends figure as it’s what he usually wears. The others are more cliche.
- How can it be made? – This could use the Daredevil body with a new groin piece for his tail. This would work perfectly for a X-men wave or box set. He is too new for a retro card so that is out. He could be part of a 2-pack with Nightcrawler or a box set with some random X-men.
