Even though is was the third member of the original X-men that Xavier recruit, he was actually the first one to be a hero. Introduced in X-Men #1 (1963) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Warren had been a hero known as Avenging Angel when he was recruited by Xavier into the X-men. As a member of the team, he was one of the backers as well as been in a love triangle with Jean Grey and Cyclops but that soon changed when he met Candy Southern. He remained with the team, only leaving for a period when he didn’t agree with Cyclops leadership. He returned but was one of the original X-men to leaving after been rescued by the new team of X-men, following his kidnapping by Krakoa. After that he became a member of the short lived team of the Champion (now known as the Champions of Los Angeles). He rejoined the X-men during the Dark Phoenix saga and stayed on the team when Cyclops left.

He would later join Beast’s led Defenders before joining the other founding X-men to form the original X-Factor. It was during this period that Warren experienced the darkest period of his life. During the Morlock Massacre, which saw the Marauders hunting and killing most of the mutants under New York, Warren was capture and tortured by the Marauders damaging his wings. Cameron Hodge used this opportunity to fake a report that Warren’s wings were beyond repair and had them amputated. Distraught, he was perfect pickings to be manipulated by Apocalypse, who gave him new metal wing and blue skin and made him his Horseman of Death. He was freed from the brainwashing thanks to the X-factot but this experience would remain with him for life. After the murder of Candy Southern and Warren “killing” Hodge, he took up the name Archangel.

When the X-factor team rejoined the X-men, Archangel was made part of Storm’s Gold team. Skipping a few thing here or there, he later regained his original wings after his metal ones molted but kept his blue skin. However a battle with a plant power Black Tom Cassidy saw his blue skin return. He later gained the ability to heal people with his blood. After the Messiah Complex, Warren was attack by a berserk Wolfbane which saw his wings ripped off. This cause his metal wings to regrow but he developed a second personality in Archangel. He was then able to switch between the 2 version (Feathered and Metal) at will and joined the X-force. He used this team to help hunt down Apocalypse followers and prevent him from returning. However this caused a program embedded in Warren’s mind to become a version of Apocalypse. Using the Life Seed, he planned to rule the world but was stopped by X-force and lost all his memory. It should also be noted that during this, he managed to get one of his Horsemen pregnant with what would become the Apocalypse Twins.  He regain his memories and with the help of Xavier, gained control over both of his forms.

Archangel has had many figure over the figures from both Toybiz and Hasbro. Toybiz released a version of Archangel in the original X-men classic line but that was more of a kid’s toy. (It was later re-release in the X-men line). In their Marvel Legends Sentinel line, they release his second Angel Champions costume with the classic blue costume as a variant. He wouldn’t see another release until SDCC 2012 as a part of the X-Force box set exclusive to that convention in his X-Force costume. This was repainted and release as a classic Archangel in the Rocket Raccoon wave sans BAF piece. He saw another release in his First Appearance costume  as part of a TRU exclusive All-New X-men box set. Finally he saw a re-release/repaint of the Classic Archangel as a Entertainment Earth and associate sites exclusive.

Have

First Appearance

Recommend Figure:Hasbro Toys-R-Us Marvel Legends All-New X-men Box Set Angel

  • Background:
    • When the team was first assembled, they all wore similar costume that would become the teams default training costume.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • Unless you have to have every first appearance costume, then this can be skipped as the set is not that great as they use the wrong body for each of the figure (except Beast, see his page for why) as each of these character were teenagers at the time. It is needed for an Angel collection but I wouldn’t break the bank to get him. I will say however that I do like the wings.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes, using a small teenage like body.

Classic Angel

Recommend Figure: Toybiz Marvel Legends Sentinel Series Angel (Variant)

  • Background:
    • After an adventure in the Savage Land, Angel was given this costume by a mysterious benefactor. This turned out to be Magneto, who used the costume to drain Warren of his mutant powers and transfer it to himself. This was remove but Warren kept the costume which would become his classic version to which all else are based on.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This is an important costume and is his classic costume. It is important for Classic X-men as well as other versions as he has returned to this a good number of times. However, with the exception of the wing, this was done of one of Toybiz’s worse bodies. Get if you want an Angel (not Archangel) in your collection.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes, I know Hasbro and blow the previous version out of the waters.

Champions Angel II

Recommend Figure: Toybiz Marvel Legends Sentinel Series Angel

  • Background:
    • Even though he had another costume when they first appearred, Warren design and wore this costume when the Champions had a press conference. He would later wear it during the Phoenix Saga and when he returned to the X-men. It would later be redesign into the X-factor costume which you can see below.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • As this was the regular release it might be easier to find then the one above. It is another important costume but like the one above is done on that awful body so I would only recommend getting it for Angel fans.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes, I know Hasbro and blow the previous version out of the waters.

Horseman of Death Archangel

25 Revisions

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Entertainment Earth Marvel Legends Archangel Set (Swappable head)

  • Background:
    • After losing his wing and becoming a pawn of Apocalypse as his horseman of Death, Warren wore this mask to hid his identity for a short period. After he broke Apocalypse brainwashing, he removed the mask and hasn’t put it on since.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This is basically a different head for the one below. If you want to have every version of Warren on your shelves, then get 2.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Classic Archangel

Recommend Figure:Hasbro Entertainment Earth Exclusive Marvel Legends Archangel Set

  • Background:
    • After Warren was freed from Apocalypse’s control, Warren continued to wear this suit long after. He wore it in both the X-factor and when he returned to the X-men as part of Storm’s team.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • If there is one Angel/Archangel figure you have to get, it’s this one. It is the most important version of Warren throughout his character as it signified the biggest change in his character, from being a rich hero to an dark hero. As for which one to get, forget the TB one. (they are shit). The Raccoon wave one is okay but for your money’s worth then get the Entertainment Earth set as it comes with more stuff, like alternate head and a new arm for Apocalypse.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

X-Force Archangel

Recommend Figure: Hasbro SDCC 2012 Exclusive Marvel Legends Uncanny X-Force Box Set Archangel with Psylocke and Wolverine

  • Background:
    • After a berserk Wolfbane ripped off his wing, Warren regained his metal wings and for some reason transformed into this black and silver suit. This also when he develop a split personality with the Archangel being a more violent version.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • You will probably need this figure to complete the Uncanny X-force. However being part of a hard to find SDCC exclusive it might be hard to track down. Hopefully, Hasbro will re-release this like they did Deadpool.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No, but I do hope he get re-release to retail, maybe a X-force box set.
