Dr. Strange (Dr. Stephen Strange, Marvel Prime)

AKA; Strange, Master of the Mystic Arts, Master of Black Magic, Stephen Sanders, Captain Universe, Vincent Stevens, Sorcerer Supreme, Red Rajah, Sherlock, Steverino, Doc Dollars, the Eye, Black Priest, Sheriff Strange, Dumb Magician

By the Crimson Bands of Cyttorak, I think this guy likes to make up words. Introduced in Strange Tales #110 (1963) by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, Dr. Stephen Strange (named so after the book he was introduced in) was once an incredible yet extremely arrogant surgeon. One night while driving, he crashed and damaged his hands beyond repair, forcing him to give up being a surgeon. Wanting to find a cure, he poured his fortune into trying to find a cure. One day he heard of a person in Tibet who could perform miracles. He traveled to the Tibetan Mountains, where he came upon a temple where he met the Ancient One. Strange begged the Ancient One to help him but the Ancient One refused as he wanted to train Strange in the mystic arts. Strange, who didn’t believe in magic at the time, turned down the offer and tried to leave but was stopped by a sudden snow storm. Staying in the temple, Strange happened upon the Ancient One’s disciple, Mordo, plotting to kill his master. Strange tried to warn the Ancient One but was stopped by Mordo. The Ancient One, knowing of Mordo’s ambitions, freed Strange and revealed that this was a test for Strange. Strange then agreed to become his apprentice.

Afterwards, Strange set up his Sanctum Sanctorum as an occult consultant in New York with his man servant Wong. There he would battle many mystical being like Mordo, Nightmare and the Dread Dormammu. He would later met and marry Dormammu’s niece, Clea, who he also aided in freeing the Dark Dimension with. He eventually was made Sorcerer Supreme after the death of the Ancient One. With the help of Namor and the Hulk, he was become one of the founding members of the Defenders, where he was the defacto leader. Some time after the Skrull-Kree War, he would become a member of the Illuminati. He would later work behind the scenes in order for the Midnight Sons to come together. Years later, after he used extremely dark magic to stop a ramaging Hulk, he had to give up the title of Sorcerer Supreme. During this time he joined Luke Cage’s New Avengers before being made into the Sorcerer Supreme again after Dr. Voodoo’s death. After the Emprikul tried to destroy magic, Strange has since tried to restore magic into the world in order to protect it.

Strange has had a number of figures over the years. Toybiz did one in their first ever BAF series as the classic version. Hasbro did 2 (well one released twice but I’ll get into that), one in the MCU Hulkbuster wave and another in the Dr. Strange Dormammu wave.

Have

Classic

Recommend Figure: Toybiz Marvel Legends Galactus Series Dr. Strange

  • Background:
    • This is his most classic version to which most version are based on and one he usually returns to. It should be noted that the Cloak of Levitation and the Eye of Agamotto, given to him by the Ancient One, are actually symbols to show that Strange is the Sorcerer Supreme. This can be seen when he had to give up the title to Brother Voodoo and Voodoo gain the cloak and eye and when he regained the title he had the cloak and eye return. It should also be noted that the pants have somethings been color different shades of blue.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • While this is the most recognizable version of Strange, this has not stood the test of time. The cloak is heavy, making the figure hard to stand and the figure joints can be extremely loose. I recommend getting this if you are Dr. Strange fan or if you just want a classic version.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes, it should be easy to repaint the Hulk buster version with the Dormammu cape.

Marvel Now

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Avengers: Age of Ultron MCU Hulkbuster Wave Dr. Strange

  • Background:
    • After Strange used forbidden magic to stop the Hulk during the World War Hulk, he relinquished the title of Sorcerer Supreme, which would eventually be given to Brother Voodoo. During that time, he would wear a red and black version of his classic costume without the cloak and sometimes with a trenchcoat.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • I would say to get this one only if you want the BAF piece that comes with him. While this does have better forearms, the Dormammu one (basically the same figure with different forearm) is better value for your money as it comes with a cloak.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. Ironically, perfect as is.

New Avengers

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Dr. Strange: Dormammu Wave Dr. Strange

  • Background:
    • As a member of the New Avengers, Daniel Drumm, Brother Voodoo’s dead brother, tried to kill Dr. Strange for his brother’s death. He took over the bodies of the New and Mighty Avengers and attacked the Avengers Mansion. After his defeat, The Ancient One’s spirit appeared before the team and restored Strange’s title as Sorcerer Supreme, along with the Cloak and Eye.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This figure is the most recent and cheapest version of Strange so far. It also has the best version of the Cloak of all the figures. This is the one I recommend getting if you do not have a Strange figure yet.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Below you will find a gallery of suits that still need to be made. I have included what I think are the possibilities of them being made. Note that these are my personal opinions and not fact. Please let me know if I have missed anything.
