Cannonball (Samuel Guthrie, Marvel Prime)

AKA; Samson Guthry, The Boy High Lord, Samuel Zachary (by Paige) “Hayseeed” (by Jubilee), “Sam” (by Tabitha Smith), “Sammy Boy” (by Wolverine), “Kentucky” (by Iceman), Jet-Ass

He was the first of the New Mutants to “graduate” to the X-men. Introduced in Marvel Graphic Novel #4 (1982) by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, the southern born Sam is the eldest of a large family, who discovered his powers when he rescued his father and fellow worker from a collapsed coal mine. This brought him into the attention of Donald Pierce who tricked him into trying to attack Prof X’s young recruit but he turned against him and joined the New Mutants. He became one of the team leader, right beside Moonstar. He remained with the team throughout it’s lifetime, beginning a relationship with Boom-Boom, only leaving when Magneto took over teaching them alongside other members. While soon joined Emma Frost’s Hellion team but soon returned to the New Mutants with some of the Hellions.

When the team became X-force, Sam was made second-in-command of the team before eventually taking over as leader when Cable left. After the team became a sub-team to the X-men, Sam accepted an offer to join the X-men. However, despite having some great achievements like defeat the Shi’Ar Gladiator, he felt he didn’t belong the the main team and eventually returned to the X-Force. He remained with the team when Pete Wisdom took over, serving as the team field leader. After the team disbanded, he join X-Corporation (teasing he was changing his codename to Jet-Ass). After taking some off, he joined Storm’s team of X-Treme X-men.

After M-Day he joined Nightcrawler’s team of X-men before eventually serving as Rogue’s second in command when she recruit villains to be part of her team. After the X-men disband after Hope was born, he was attacked by the Young X-men who were tricked into believing he was part of the Brotherhood by Donald Pierce. He joined Sunspot and others into training the young mutants. When Magik returned, he joined the new team of New Mutants. He joined Wolverine’s side after the Schism and became a teacher of flying at Jean Grey’s School. Disillusioned with the X-men and Cyclops after AVX, Sam accepted Cap’s offer to join the Avengers, first as a member of the main team and later on Sunspot’s AIM and US Avengers. While on that team, he met and fell in love with Shi’Ar and human half breed Smasher. She eventually became pregnant with his child, who they named Josiah. He would later rejoin the X-force after Cable’s death.

Cannonball actually had quite a success in terms of toys but not so much with ML. Hasbro release a version of the first X-force costume but that was a near straight repaint of the TB Johnny Blaze Ghost Rider. Not only that but it was part of a Exclusive 2-pack with Domino. Hasbro announced that the X-force wave has a Cannonball with blasting effects but they have said that it might not have leg. This remains to be seen if it is true or not.

X-force I

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-force Wave Cannonball

  • Background:
    • After Cable took over the New Mutants and the arrival of Shatterstar, the team became X-Force. As such, they all redesigned their costumes to reflect this. Here is Cannonball, which is basically similar to a flight jacket and google worn by fighter pilots.
  • Why you need it for your collection?:
    • It should be noted that Hasbro has supposed to have said that this figure will not have leg but it should also be noted that only one site has made that claim so it might be changed. Anyhow, if you are an X-force fan then this is an absolute must, particularly if you want to complete the first team where we have 3 other members as well in this period’s costumes. It is also a must for X-men, X-factor, Avengers, US Avengers and many more teams.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Below you will find a gallery of suits that still need to be made. I have included what I think are the possibilities of the suit being made. Note that these are my personal opinions and not fact. Please let me know if I have missed anything.
