What’s worse then a vampire that drains your lifeforce? How bout a vampire that looks like a humanoid dinosaur? Introduce in X-Men #59 by Roy Thomas and Neal Adams, Karl Lykos was once a expedition guide with his father when, while guiding a father and daughter pair, encountered some Savage Land pteranodons. One of them bit him but they managed to survive. Years later, Karl was studying to be a doctor when he met Professor Xavier. An encounter with the X-men and an out of control Havok lead to Karl attempting to drain Havok’s energy. Since this was the first time he had drain the life force of a mutant, Karl was transformed into Sauron but this transformation alter his mind and made him turn evil. After a few encounters with the X-men, Sauron eventually arrived the place he became famous for, the Savage Land.
While there, he helped the local Mutates in fighting Ka-Zar, Angel and Spider-man. He became their leader and continued to try and take over the Savage Land but was constantly defeated. He was later recruited by Toad to become a member of his Brotherhood of Evil Mutants and they battle with the X-force and later X-Factor. In another attempt at Taking over the Savage Land, his mind was turned into a more animalistic state but he eventually regain his mind and went to New York to fight the X-men but was handed over to SHIELD. He was place in the custody of Weapon X (the same version that Deadpool was a member, hence the reason he was the BAF for his wave). He would eventually help to try and take down the Director only to be betrayed. He would later be sent to the Raft, where the Mutates hired Electro to break him out of prison, which lead to be massive villain breakout and the forming of the New Avengers. The Avengers tracked him back to the Savage Land where he revealed a rogue SHIELD Op. He was taking back into custody but he was recruited by the Karl Kilgore’s Hellfire Academy as it’s Mad Science and Gym Teacher. Once they were defeated, he teamed up with Stegron when they tried to turn Staten Island into a dinosaur world but were defeated by Spider-man and his X-men students.
As far back as the Toybiz days, people have been asking for a Sauron figure, usually as a BAF. So much so that he was one of the top 5 most requested X-Baf alongside Nimrod, Strong Guy, Professor X’s Hoverchair and a new Apocalypse (which we just got). Hasbro tease a possible figure in one of their Diorama’s at SDCC, but that turned out to be just a custom. Of course, Hasbro are no fouls so they have tease a possible true release for a few years and finally revealed a Sauron BAF in the second wave of Deadpool Legends.
Savage Land II
Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Deadpool Sauron Wave Sauron (BAF)
- As he live more and more in the Savage Land, he began to wear the local custom by wearing a loincloth. While he would wear other suit, this would become his signature design.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- Yeah I did say that it was the most requested X-men baf for year, but, and this is really really small, not alot of people outside the comics and even the nineties know about this guy. But it is absolutely essential for many collections, the primary being of course X-men rogue’s Gallery, as well as Deadpool, Avengers and Spider-man. Also if you were lucky enough to get the Savage Land box set from the SDCC from a few years back, then this would work perfectly with that set as Ka-Zar is considered his arch-enemy.
- Does it need a remake?:
