Bishop (Lucas Bishop, Earth-1191 / Marvel Prime)

Very few heroes in the Marvel Universe are actual cops. So it’s weird that the most famous one is actually from the future. Introduced in Uncanny X-Men #282 (1991) by Jim Lee and Whilce Portacio, Bishop comes from a future where Sentinels have taken over the world and mutants and human had to live in internment camps and mutants were brand with a “M” on their face. (Note:not the same world as Days of Future Past). Bishop grew up hearing stories about the X-men and their heroics. After humans and mutants joined together to defeat the Sentinels, Bishop and eventually his sister Shard joined the XSE, a police force created to hunt down criminal mutants to ease the tension between mutants and humans. While hunting down a mutant named Fitzroy traveled back in time, Bishop followed him knowing he could return to his time and met his childhood heroes the X-men.

Despite his harsh method and his distrusted of Gambit, who he believed would be the greatest traitor of the X-men, Bishop eventually joined the X-men. When the world was changed into the Age of Apocalypse, it was Bishop who convinced Legion not to killed Magneto and restored the world. During a space adventure with the X-men, he was separated from the team and had to join up with Deathbird, who betrayed him and handed him over to Apocalypse as part of the Twelve. He was then sent through time but wound up back in the main timeline where he meant Prof X and his Cadre K team (a team of Mutant Skrulls). They returned to Earth and Bishop joined Storm’s X-Treme X-men team to search for Destiny’s Dairies. He would stay on the team when they became a new XSE squad and around this time he became a cop in the District X section of New York, a mutant district.

Bishop retain his powers after M-Day but sided more with the ONE Sentinel squad then the X-men. He eventually left the X-men and joined up with Iron Man’s side on the Civil War. When the first mutant baby since then was born (Hope Summers), Bishop believed that she was actually the Mutant terrorist that was the main cause of his future coming about. He began hunting the baby and Cable in order to kill her. He followed Cable to his time and teamed up with Stryfe to kill her. He failed and eventually return to the present. He realized that he was wrong to try and kill Hope and eventually joined up with Cable’s X-force team. While Hope sought to kill Bishop for years of him trying to kill her, they eventually made peace. Bishop would eventually return to the X-men.

While Bishop is a fan favorite, he has had very few figures in ML. He had 2 figures on the Toybiz Apocalypse series, one regular release as his Classic figure and one variant as his XSE costume. Since then, fans have been asking for a new figure for year (particularly one fan from Marvelousnews.com forums). Hasbro finally answered the call by giving us a new Bishop in the Sauron wave of Deadpool Legends.

Haves

First Appearance / Classic / XSE uniform

01

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Deadpool Sauron Wave Bishop

  • Background:
    • This is the standard uniform that the Xavier Sanction Executive wear. This would become Bishop signature costume that he would usually return to. It is also the costume he wore in the 90’s cartoon.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This one is a obvious most for any X-men collection. As for which one, while the TB one is a great figure, it is really showing it’s time and has weird proportions and articulation. That been said, the Hasbro one is the newer less expensive one that will look great next to all you modern figures.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.

Uncanny X-men XSE (Kind of)

02

Recommend Figure: Toybiz Marvel Legends Apocalypse series Bishop (Variant)

  • Background:
    • After defeating an interdimensional ruler and a druglord, Storm approached the US government to allow her to set up a new team that would hunt down mutant treats with mutants. The members all got new uniform and this is Bishop’s. (or close enough)
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • I honestly don’t see the point in getting this as, beside Rachel Grey’s figure, it is the only figure from that team and was extremely short lived. Get it if you are a Bishop fanatic but otherwise you can skip.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No.
