Some one in Marvel must be a huge fan of the 90’s anime series. Introduced in Edge of Spider-Verse #5 (2014) by Gerard Way and Jake Wyatt, Peni Parker is the daughter of the previous pilot of the SP//DR mech suit, who died piloting the suit. She was told by this universe’s Uncle Ben and Aunt May that she was the only person who could pilot the suit when she was nine. She agreed and allow a radioactive spider, part of the suit’s CPU, to bite her. Years later, when she was in high school, she was pulled from class by Daredevil to help to stop Mysterio. After his defeat and while she was taking the subway home, she was approached by Old Man Spider-man and Spider-ham who recruited her into Spider-army.
While she wasn’t a major character to the Spider-verse, seen mostly in the background, what make her story so interesting is the amount of anime references in her chapter. The suit itself is a huge reference to the mech suits of the Evangelion. In class she attended school with what looks like Dirty Pair’s Kei, Gurren Lagann’s Shimon and Evangelion’s Asuka, Rei, Shinji and Nagisa. Mysterio minions also reference other anime series with them fighting the Ghost in the Shell SAC team as well as Akira’s Kaneda among others. It’s like Peni’s universe is the oasis of every anime there is. (Damn my otaku side is showing).
SP//DR is a very little known character that I honestly never thought we would be getting. However, she is the BAF for the SP//DR wave.
Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Spider-man SP//DR wave – SP//DR (BAF)
- Like I mentioned before this mech suit, which she pilots more like a costume rather then a cockpit, is heavily influenced by the Evangelion’s mech known as EVA. It has been drawn differently through it’s short tenure.
- Why you need it for your collection?:
- This BAF is not going to be for everyone. It is absolutely needed for a Spider-verse shelf and maybe for anime fans but outside that most people might not want her as they probably have no clue who she is. Awesome looking toy none the less.
- Does it need a remake?:
