Marvel Girl / Phoenix / Black Queen / Dark Phoenix (Jean Grey-Summer, Marvel Prime)

In comics, death doesn’t mean you’re gone forever. It means you will return to life when the writer wants you. Jean Grey takes it to the extreme. Introduced in X-Men #1 (1963) by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, Jean Grey was Xavier’s first ever student (not first X-men. That was Cyclops). He trained her from childhood after she had her powers awoke just as her best friend was dying and eventually asked for her to come to the X-mansion where she was introduced to the other members of the X-men. She was invited to become the first female X-man of the team, under the codename Marvel Girl. While on the team, she met and fell in love with Cyclops. When the original team was saved from Krakoa, she left the team for a while but she would help the team from time to time.

For years, Jean was a token female character, being a hostage or being involved in a love triangle. This all changed during the X-men’s most famous storyline, the Dark Phoenix saga. Trying to pilot a crashing shuttle into Jamaica Bay, she was believed killed but suddenly burst out of the lake claiming she was the Phoenix. The team didn’t think much of it at the time but Jean started to demonstrate strange behavior, including altering Kitty Pryde’s parents mind. It turned out she was being manipulated by Mastermind and the Hellfire Club. They believed that they could control her as their Black Queen. However, the power of the Phoenix drove Jean crazy, causing her to go into space where she destroyed a star and killed billions of lives on a nearby planet. During a battle with the Shi’Ar guard, she sacrificed her life to stop the Phoenix from going out of control. (That the extreme digest of  that storyline).

However, it turned out that it wasn’t Jean Grey but the Phoenix taking on her appearance. Jean was found still in Jamaica Bay by the Avengers. She was reunited with Cyclops (who was married at the time with a child). The two’s minds were sent to the future to raise Cyclops’ son, Nathan, into becoming the freedom fighter Cable. Having been sent back, they reunited with the original X-men to form the X-Factor. After the Inferno arc, they all rejoined the X-men. She eventually married Cyclops. The two would leave and return to the X-men a couple of times, usually trying to live a normal life. She was eventually killed by Xorn, who was pretending to be Magneto, by stopping her heart. She stayed dead for quite a while (the longest ever) until she was recently resurrected and formed a new X-men Red team.

When it comes to Jean Grey figures, she is the female version of Spider-man / Wolverine / Iron-man. Not kidding. She has had more figures then any other female character in all of Marvel, including movie and alternate universes. Toybiz released one in their Series VI which had a Dark Phoenix variant figure. Hasbro released a load of them as well. Their first (comic book) version was a TRU exclusive Black Queen. Then she was released in a exclusive 2-pack with Cable. She was part of the Rocket Racoon wave as well as part of the All-new X-men box set. When Hasbro relaunched the X-men line in ML, they released her in the Juggernaut wave and again in a TRU 2-pack with Cyclops.

First Appearance

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Toys-R-Us Exclusive Marvel Legends All-New X-men box set Marvel Girl (with Cyclops, Iceman, Angel and Beast)

  • Background:
    • When the team first started, all the X-men wore almost identical costumes with Jean Grey wearing a female version. It was also the first time she went by the name Marvel Girl. Not only was it Jean’s first costume, but it would become the standard costume for all new members of the team, including Kitty Pryde and later young students.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • I have always loved getting a First Appearance costume and this is the only version of her at the moment. However, at the time, the team were still teenagers so an adult build was not suitable for her. I say get this set if you are a big Jean Grey fan or just love a First Appearance collection.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes. I think Hasbro needs to redo this version on the teen body (along with most of the set).

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Walmart Exclusive Marvel Legends 2-pack Marvel Girl (with Cable)

  • Background:
    • After the team defeated the alien race the Z’Noc, Xavier announced that they had all graduated from his school. To celebrate, he gave them all individual costumes designed and made by Jean Grey. (In real life, this was done to try a boast the comic’s bad sales.)
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • No. Just No. Don’t even think of getting this horrible figure. Not even hardcore Jean Grey fans should get this.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes. Maybe as a box set with the whole team?

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends X-men Juggernaut Wave Phoenix

  • Background:
    • When Jean Grey burst out of Jamaica Bay after she crashed with a plane, she was first seen wearing this iconic costume. It has since become her signature costume.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This figure is an absolute must for any X-men fan. It is a big part of the team history and is part of  probably the most important story line that the X-men ever had.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. Hasbro only just redid it. If you don’t like the head then you can switch it with the Dark Phoenix 2-pack head.

Black Queen

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Toys-R-Us Exclusive Marvel Legends Black Queen

  • Background:
    • For months Mastermind and the Hellfire Club had been manipulating Jean with delusions of a romance with Mastermind. This was a plan to try a control her. She eventually joined the Hellfire Club as the club’s Black Queen. During a fight with the X-men, Mastermind’s control over Jean broke, leading to………………..
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • This is not something people need. It was a short lived costume and as you can see, not comic book accurate (but the chance of us getting this is zero). If they make the other members of the Hellfire club, then get this. Otherwise, skip.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes. Hellfire Club box set?

Dark Phoenix

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Toys-R-Us Exclusive Marvel Legends 2-pack Dark Phoenix (with Cyclops)

  • Background:
    • ……..Jean Grey’s control over the Phoenix force broke after being manipulated by the Hellclub Club. She then went into space on a mad rampage eventually destroying a star, which explosion destroyed a nearby planet, killing billions of lives. A Shi’Ar ship had witness this, so when Jean returned to Earth she was captured by the Shi’Ar and put on trail for her crimes. The X-men tried to save her with Trail by Combat but Jean, feeling the Phoenix was taking over again, sacrificed her life in order to prevent it.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • Another figure that is a absolute most for any X-men fan, mostly for the same reason as the green one above. This was also voted one of the best figures of 2017 so it is a great set to get.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. The recent figure is perfect.

Jim Lee’s Blue Strike Team

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Raccoon Rocket wave Jean Grey

  • Background:
    • After the members of the original X-force rejoined the X-men after the Inferno event, there was too many members for one team. So the team was split up into two teams with one being led by Cyclops and the other by Storm. Jean was a member of Storm’s Gold team. Most of the X-men either got new costumes or upgraded classics.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • Hasbro are slowing completing the Jim Lee versions of the X-men, so this is needed for that. Also if you want to have all the costumes from the animated series, which was based on the Jim Lee style, then get this.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes. While not as bad as some say, I would love to see Hasbro redo this one.

Below is a gallery of costumes that still need to be made. Click on the image to see chances of it being made. Please note that this is my personal opinion and not fact. If I missed anything, please let me know in the comments below.
