Black Knight (Dane Whitman, Marvel Prime)

Almost ever comic book universe has something to connect it to the Arthurian legends. For Marvel, that is the Black Knight. Introduced in Avengers #47 (1967) by Roy Thomas and George Tuska, Dane Whitman is the nephew of the villain Black Knight, Nathan Garret. When Garret was dying from a wound he suffered from a battle with Iron Man, he asked Dane to take up the mantle and restore their family honour and fight for good. Reluctant at first, he later learned that the Masters where planning to attack the Avengers, so he went to warn them but they thought he was his uncle and attacked him. He decided to join the Master when they captured the team but betrayed them to rescue the Avengers. He was given membership soon after.

BK later learnt that he was in fact the latest in a long line of Black Knights going as far back of Sir Percival of Camelot. Each was tasked in wielding and protect the Ebony Blade, a sword that can drive the wielder insane and the polar opposite of Excalibur. He travelled to English where he met the ghost of Sir Percy as well as becoming close friends with Captain Britain. BK would later go onto to join the Defenders where he was transformed into stone by the Enchantress (got better). He would later serve a long term in the Avengers where he met and fell in love with the Eternal Sersi but was “killed” (sent to the Ultraverse when she went insane. They returned and Black Knight to join the Heroes For Hire and teamed up with the New Excalibur to help battle dragon in Camelot. He was in England when the Secret Invasion happened and became part of MI:13. He later became a knight in Weirdworld.

Black Knight has always been a fan favourite in comics but not so much in toys. Hasbro release a more modern version in one of their first wave that has some bad articulation and sculpting. Hasbro is now releasing a newer classic version base on his run in the Marvel UK stories (and yes, Avengers Alliance as well).

Haves

Marvel UK / Avengers Alliance01

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Avengers: Infinity War Wave Black Knight

  • Background:
    • When Marvel UK started making their own comics they started using the most famous character first. However, Black Knight had appeared in a Hulk issue which lead to his own UK exclusive series (at the time). This was also the suit that they used in the IOS game Avengers Alliance.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • While it’s not the one people asked for (the wings on the head is mainly the reason why) it very close to the classic version we wanted. It is truly needed for you Avengers collection as well as Excalibur, MI: 13, Heroes for Hire etc. Or if you are like me you could put him next to other British heroes (yes I know he was born in the States) like Union Jack and Cap Brit.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • No. Expect with a classic head but I have a feeling we will get that if the Riders series proves successful. Aragorn any one?

Heroes For Hire

02

Recommend Figure: Hasbro Marvel Legends Brood Queen Wave Black Knight

  • Background:
    • After returning from the Ultraverse with Sersei, Black Knight split with her. He then joined up with Heroes for Hire with was being run by Namor’s company Oracle. He updated his costume then.
  •  Why you need it for your collection?:
    • With Hasbro releasing a newer (abet older version) figure, then this one can be skipped. Unless you want to get him for his shield or want to have this costume for that team. Other wise wait for the newer one.
  • Does it need a remake?:
    • Yes. The one we got is fairly bad with shit articulation.

NEEDS:

Below is a gallery of costumes that still need to be made. Click on the image to see chances of it being made. Please note that this is my personal opinion and not fact. If I missed anything, please let me know in the comments below.
